responsible for the pilot project on, MeREM; NIES is the core organization
of the project and is responsible for water quality, algae, aquatic plants,
invertebrates, and development of the database and information sharing
system. Tohoku University is responsible for harmful chemicals and

All Japanese organizations play their roles in collaborating with
nodes of riparian countries.
In 2003, NIES organized the international collaboration system, including establishing an International Committee consisting of a chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer, representatives from national nodes of riparian countries, and advisers. In addition, a Research Promotion Committee was established to check and review the progress of the project. As a whole, the project will be implemented by core and sub-organizations in Japan, the International Committee of MeREM, the national nodes of the riparian countries, and the Research Promotion Committee.
